History

According to Dan Muirhead, the telegraph was salvaged from the Sea-Land [1, 2] Atlantic, a container ship built in 1985. She was from the so-called Atlantic Class, built in Korea. These boats were intended to be used for 10 years, then to be scrapped, with the engines repurposed.

The original version of this telegraph was patented in 1921. It used no exteranl power source, but orders were sent and verified by turning a hand crank. I can't document when this design, using 110 volts AC, was first built. The Herschel company has survived multiple acquisitions. At the time of the manufacture, the nameplate indicates that the company was owned by General Signal. This would seem to show that the unit was built after 1979. [1}

The only possible serial number that I found is "1914" that is inked onto the inside of the front (port) side.
